Question 1

What distances are considered ultramarathons?

Accepted Answer

Any footrace longer than 26.2 miles (42.2 km) is an ultramarathon. Common distances are 50K (31 miles), 50 miles, 100K (62 miles), and 100 miles. Some events are also measured by time — 12-hour, 24-hour, and 48-hour formats.

Question 2

How do I register for an ultramarathon?

Accepted Answer

Most ultramarathons use Ultrasignup, iRunFar, or their own race websites for registration. Lottery-based races like Western States 100 and Hardrock 100 require submitting an entry during a specific window, often months in advance. Check each race's page for specific registration dates and qualifying requirements.

Question 3

What should I look for when choosing my first ultramarathon?

Accepted Answer

For a first ultra, prioritize a 50K on moderate terrain with generous cutoff times. Look for a race with well-stocked aid stations every 5–8 miles. Avoid high-altitude or very technical courses until you have a 50K finish under your belt.

Question 4

How should I pace a 100-mile ultramarathon?

Accepted Answer

Effort-based pacing is more reliable than GPS pace for 100-mile races, where terrain makes pace-per-mile meaningless. The first 50 miles should feel almost too easy: heart rate in Zone 1 to low Zone 2 (50–65% of maximum). Walk any climb that pushes you above that ceiling. One study found that lab fitness tests could not predict 100-mile finishing times, so how you pace the race matters a lot.

Question 5

How much should I eat during an ultramarathon?

Accepted Answer

Most ultramarathon runners take in far too little. Research recommends 60–90 grams of carbohydrate per hour for events over 2.5 hours. The average runner consumes only about 37g per hour. Eating on a schedule — not on hunger — is critical, especially in the back half of a race when appetite suppression is common.
